Termites
Signs of Infestation

Winged Termites:

One of the most common signs of infestation is the appearance of hundreds or thousands of winged termites suddenly coming from the wall or the floor beneath your feet.

The conditions that trigger a swarm is a combination of successive days of 60-70 degree temperatures along with spring rain.

Winged termites are male and female adults that are produced by mature colonies to establish a new breeding colony.

Winged termites that swarm indoors are not likely to begin a colony inside your home because it is too dry. They can be easily removed by sweeping or vacuuming and they do not have stingers.

A termite swarm in the structure represents the close proximity of a mature colony of termites in the foundation supports of your home or in the adjacent soil next to the structure. A thorough inspection by a certified professional can almost always determine their location.

Termites are very poor fliers and travel short distances. They shed their wings and pair up soon after they land on the ground. After pairing termites search for a new suitable place to mate and lay eggs to begin a new breeding colony. That is, provided they survive the ants, birds, lizards and frogs that love fresh termite meals.

The most suitable location will contain cellulose and moisture. Termites find cellulose in wood, paper and clothing.

When termite swarms occur
hundreds if not thousands of
termites appear in a short time.

After termites swarm they take a
nuptial flight and lose their wings. The female on the left attracts the male on the right by releasing a chemical pheromone.

Shelter Tubes:

The presence of termite shelter tubes is always evidence of existing or previous termite infestation. Sometime no termites are found in the shelter tubes because termites build exploratory tubes in search of food.

Shelter tubes are made from soil particles along with termite saliva and fecal material. Shelter tubes protect termites from their enemies and moisture because of their soft bodies.

Often, termite shelter tubes appear dry and brittle and no termites are found in the tubes. This does not mean their is no termite activity, the termites may have found other ways to reach their "feeding site." An experienced professional technician can determine this upon inspection. For example, the termites may be feeding outside the structure as they followed the interface between the concrete and wood beams along the structural "lines" of sill plates, door frames, etc.
